Smoothie bar chooses Ilkeston
|
The owner of a smoothie bar which has just opened in Ilkeston has said he was inspired to set up shop in the town after reading about our Staying Alive campaign.
U Choose in Bath Street was officially opened by Mayor of Erewash Cllr Terry Holbrook and received a blessing from Catholic priest, Father Colin Taylor, on Thursday, May 28.
When passing through Ilkeston a few months ago, Paul Opiah and his brother picked up a copy of the Advertiser and read about our campaign to keep our town centres thriving.
He said: "We read it and thought to ourselves, 'What a good idea', and this is how we ended up opening up in Ilkeston."
Husband and wife team, Paul and Lina Opiah, are hoping to expand their menu of more than 30 different
smoothies.
They also strongly believe in the health benefits of their recipes.
Paul said: "All the recipes are Taiwanese and are used in hospitals out there.
"We want to see if Ilkeston Community Hospital will try some of our recipes for their patients."
Paul has one other smoothie bar in south-east London and hopes to expand the U Choose chain across Derbyshire.

Campaign to save our towns
|
Thriving shops are the lifeblood of any town and it is vital we take action to keep them open.
Boarded-up stores blight our high street – a fact that was forcefully brought home to many towns with the demise of Woolworths.
Ilkeston was no exception and the sad state of Bath Street is testiment to how bad the situation has become here.
Efforts are being made to disguise the decline with the fantastic old photographs mounted on the disused stores but we hope that more can be done in the coming months.
Today, the Advertiser is launching a new campaign to get behind our shopkeepers and the groups striving to keep our town alive.
We will be including a variety of special features in the paper from
now until Christmas – all with the aim of protecting our town.
We will be staging a competition in association with the Derbyshire Building Society to find our favourite shop assistant.
There will be a chance for traders to enter themselves for special awards; we will be backing the charter fair in the autumn and we will also be putting our weight behind the county council's latest initiative to get people shopping locally.
We want to write special features on our success stories and help to fill some of the empty stores by making sure everyone knows what a great town Ilkeston could be in which to shop and work.
Paul Calladine, market town co-ordinator with the Erewash Partnership, who have already made efforts to keep Ilkeston thriving, said: "Town centre viability is right at the top of the Partnership's agenda.
"We welcome the Advertiser's campaign and look forward to working together to support local businesses."
Manager of Midlands Co-op's Ilkeston department store, Dave Elliott, said: "Naturally we welcome any initiative that increases customer footfall to the town.
"In terms of our own department store we are planning to introduce additional concessions to increase customer choice and enhance their shopping experience."
What do you think can be done to help restore our town centre to its former glory. Let us know by commenting on this story.

Smoked haddock fishcake with tomato and olive salsa
By Gino D'Acampo
A great summery recipe. Serves one.
Ingredients:
• 70g smoked haddock
• 1 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped
• 120g tinned potatoes, drained
• 1 egg
• ½ red chilli, seeded and chopped
• 1 tomato, chopped, seeds removed
• 50g kalamata olives, pitted
• 30g courgette
• 1 lemon
• 20g breadcrumbs
• Flour for dusting
Method:
• Combine the haddock, breadcrumbs, half the coriander, the zest of the lemon, potatoes, chilli, a small squeeze of lemon juice and the egg in a bowl. Mould into a cake shape and dust with flour. Fry in olive oil for 2 minutes. Flip the cake into a dry pan and cook in the oven for a further 3 minutes at 180°C.
• Cut the courgette into matchsticks and marinate with half the remaining lemon juice and a glug of extra virgin olive oil. Leave for 5 minutes.
• To make the salsa, toss the olives and tomato with the remaining coriander and the rest of the lemon juice.
• Serve the fishcake with the salsa scattered around it and the courgette on top.
