Update on the closure of Albion Leisure Centre

Albion Leisure CentreFollowing the decision by the Council earlier this year to close the Albion Leisure Centre, action is now being taken to relocate service users and to redeploy the staff to other leisure centres and council services.

Two employees have already been matched into vacant positions and another round of recruitment will begin at the end of April.

The Rutland Sports Park tennis centre is now being re-surfaced to allow multi-sport use. When this work is completed at the end of May, service users from the Albion Leisure Centre will start to be transferred over. It is expected that nearly all of the centre's users will be relocated by the end of August, with the facility closing for good as planned on or before 1st December 2008.

We've put together a document of Frequently Asked Questions, which should answer most of your queries.

Rutland Sports Park rises to the challenge for Sport Relief

Sport ReliefRutland Sports Park played host to the Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile last month. This is the 2nd year that Rutland has taken part in the event. Thousands across the country ran a mile for Sport Relief, helping to raise over £24million to date.

Comic Relief spends the money raised to help vulnerable people living incredibly tough lives both at home in the UK and in the world's poorest countries. Well done to all that took part!

NEWS BRIEF

CSN logo
Our Sport and Health Development department has worked closely with the Erewash Community Sport Network to successfully secure £83,000 of Community Investment Funding to develop and implement the sporting priorities identified by local sports clubs and partners in Erewash over the next three years. The three main target areas are to increase the number of sporting volunteers; to increase the number of quality assured sports clubs; and to expand the 'Alive and Active' project to attract young females into sport and activity. The various projects will cost a total of £148,000 to put in place and along with the partnership funding already secured from the Healthy Erewash Partnership,
Erewash Community Sport Network, Erewash Borough Council and Erewash School Sports Partnership we can now start work.

Cash Boost for Erewash Sporting Stars of the Future

Some of the winners with Councillor Mike Wallis and Rob Harrison of Derby CollegeSix of Erewash's emerging sports stars received a welcome cash boost earlier this month when they were presented with bursaries from the Derbyshire Talented Athlete Fund.

Basketball players Louise Bradley and Ben Morley, golfer Nick Newbold, jet-skier Anya Colley and swimmers Ann Morris and Olivia Sefton have each received £300 to help them develop their sporting careers – with the money helping toward training, travel and equipment costs.

The six Erewash athletes are among 60 sports performers from across Derbyshire that are supported by the Fund and all compete for England or Great Britain, or have the potential to do so within 18 months.
