Review of 2005

THE biggest and best St George's Day celebration in the country took place in Ilkeston on Saturday, with thousands of townsfolk lining the streets for the parade before heading to a party on the Rutland Recreation Ground.
After persuading the Wetherspoonspub franchise to ensure a big party atmosphere nationwide, Ilkeston put the rest of England to shame with their festivities.

A 30 feet dragon blowing smoke and growling was slain by St George and many an olde English knight was on display as patriots young and old donned the mock chainmail and battled it out. The day passed without trouble thanks to a working partnership between the parade organisers and Ilkeston police and fun was had by everyone in attendance.
Peter Wade helped organise the day and said: "This was our day to celebrate. We are the English, from England.
"Let's all be proud, stand up and be counted - shout it out loud. Celebrate our glorious past and not forget when England lost hosts of her very brave sons!
Liza Earl, Director of Peter James hair salon, cut off the long flowing locks of Lee McMahon in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief and raised £801.25. Peter and Chris Wade put a lot of time into making the occasion the success it was along with Richard Dawson.
Peter said: "This event would not have been possible if it wasn't for the support of many local companies which gave generous donations. So to all the people who helped in anyway - thank you." Special thanks went to Heathers Cakes, Aldreds the Bakers, John Windmill, Roy Salt and Alan Chambers and staff at the cricket club.
Rev. Colin Lee was given a special mention for his blessing and the wreath laid at the cenotaph was highly commended for the work done by the girls at Flower Fare.
